Yesterday I drew a "blob" in my sketchbook and then "looked" for something. I turned the paper around and around - nothing. I drew eyes here and there and still nothing. And then suddenly I saw it - Beotte the Bird. Beotte is a popular name in the Land of Fleep (see the Art of Silliness by Carla Sonheim). Oh how I love new additions to my fun little collection of creatures.

Beotte the Bird

The Art of Silliness 2.9 - Blind Contours
The Art of Silliness had us doing blind contours of one of our grade school photos (wasn't I cute?)
Blind contour drawing is a method of drawing popularized by Kimon Nicolaides in his book The Natural Way to Draw (1941).
Contour drawing is an excellent way to train the eye to draw what it really sees rather than what it thinks it sees. Usually the drawings look funny especially at first. With practice, though, they can be quite good.
These three drawings are definitely in the funny category.

create The Squeen's Royal Foot Warmer, also known as a Neotoou. (For new readers, the Squeen rules The Land
of Fleep where everything is quite silly.)

The Squeen's Favorite Pet I connected the dots according to the assignment. Since I was at work and didn't have access to color pencils or markers, I scanned it and enhanced it digitally adding elements from previous worksheets. I must say I love using Photoshop.

The Art of Silliness 2 - Bird Guy Is Ready
The Art of Silliness 2 starts today! I have been looking forward to seeing what Carla Sonheim has in store for us this time. This particular worksheet was a "test run." Participants were asked to write a story about the "bird guy." Of course, we all had to add our own embellished touches (striped hat, No. 2 pencil and a "think silly" pin).
We will be receiving a new worksheet everyday. I can't wait to go home and work on the new one.

A turtle, a cow and a horse
More creature creations inspired by cracks I see in sidewalks. This is Mr. Turtle. I spotted him immediately on my walk. Sometimes, I have to walk around a bit to find a creature, but this guy popped out right away. Below are couple of others I found the same day. The horse was crying for tennis shoes and the fat cow has the same look my cat gives me.
