I was hoping for a White Christmas. I was, though, visualizing myself in it - not 1,500 miles away. I have the distinction of being one of the 12,000 people in Los Angeles that were not able to travel due to the excessive amount of snow the Denver airport received.
After hours of busy signals at Frontier Airlines and Orbitz, I was finally able to talk to Phil in the Philippines who tediously helped me rebook my trip back home. Tedious because Orbitz computers were freezing due to everyone calling just like me. I quickly realized I was not going to make it back in time for Christmas. Thousands of people across the nation were all trying to get the few available seats during a heavily booked travel season.
So I will be spending my first Christmas in Los Angeles since moving here sixteen years ago. I was bummed for awhile, but kept thinking of scenarios that could be far worse than mine. (Serving in Iraq, sleeping on the floor in an airport, sitting in a car stuck in a snow drift.) And as the saying goes, there is a reason for everything.
Entertaining myself has never been a problem for me. I am thinking of creative ways of celebrating by myself. The first thing I did today was buy a Christmas tree. It will not take much to decorate it since it stands about 15" high. However it is cute and smells like a Christmas tree. I also found a new fabulous store "hidden" on the second floor of the Flower Mart, downtown LA. To find GM, take the escalators, which are not easily seen walking around among all the flowers and plants. They have lots of wonderful things that are different from the run of the mill decorative items.
When I saw the lime green tinsel wreath with lights, I knew it would be going home with me. To decorate it, I added a wonderful cha-cha girl and some fuzzy colorful balls. There were so many other things I walked away from even though it was hard.
